Introduction

Nitzavim (also spelled Nitsavim or Nitzabim) is a Hebrew word for "ones standing," and it is the second word, and the first distinctive word, in the parsha.
Vayelech (also spelled as Vayeilech, VaYelech or Va-yelech) is a Hebrew word for "then he went out.”

The quick overview of the parsha are as follows:
Moses tells the Israelites that the L-RD’s covenant speaks to them and to all of the succeeding generations who will follow.
The L-RD warns the children of Israel that they will be punished if they act idolatrously, the way the inhabitants of the other nations do.
Moses reassures the assembled people that the L-RD will never forsake them and that they will receive blessings by following the commandments of the L-RD.
Moses prepares the Israelites for his death and declares that Joshua will succeed him according to the L-RD’s command.
Moses instructs the priests and the elders regarding the importance of reading the Torah and the cycle of its reading.
The L-RD informs Moses that upon his death, the people will commit idolatry and "many evils and troubles shall befall them."
G-D tells Moses to teach the people a poem that will "be My witness."
If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the L-RD thy G-d, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the L-RD thy G-d with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.

Parsha Ki Teitzei: When You Go Out [To Battle]

Introduction

Ki Teitzei ( כִּי־תֵצֵא†) is a Hebrew phrase for "when you go out.” It covers Deuteronomy 21:10–25:19. The parsha sets out a series of varieties of laws, mostly governing civil and domestic life, including ordinances regarding a female captives of war, inheritance among the sons of two wives, a rebellious son, the corpse of an executed person by hanging, found property, coming upon another in distress, rooftop safety, forbidding mixtures, sexual offences, affiliation in the congregation, camp hygiene, runaway slaves, prostitution, usury, vows, gleaning, kidnapping, repossession, prompt payment of wages, vicarious liability, flogging, treatment of domestic animals, levirate marriage, weights and measures, and remembrance of the Amalekites among other things.
Woe to you hypocritical Torah-teachers and Pharisees! You pay your tithes of mint, dill and cumin; but you have neglected the weightier matters of the Torah — justice, mercy, trust. These are the things you should have attended to — without neglecting the others!

Parsha Shof'Tim: Judges

9/5/2017

By Jaime Noriega | 2017

Introduction

The Torah reading called "Judges" opens with the command to appoint judges and law-enforcement officials in all city gates that the L-RD G-d is giving, for every tribe, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgement.

A judge refers to one qualified to deliver judgments according to the laws of the Torah with mishpat (justice) and tzedakah (righteousness) and were to be entirely impartial in their findings. The officer then enforces these legal judgements, even by force if necessary. Warning is giving to the judges that they do not show any kind of partiality or favouritism and are forbidden from accepting a bribe. It is written that G-d shows no favouritism, but accepts anyone from any nation who fears Him and does what is right.
Everyone who fails to listen to that prophet will be removed from the people and destroyed.
